Traditional Canoe Paddle

Traditional Marquesan canoe paddle with the beak of a bird (kikutu manu), carved from mahogany on Nuku Hiva Island. Historically, this type of paddle served both as a means of propulsion and as a weapon during tribal battles. With its unique extension at the bottom, designed for pushing through shallow water and defending against enemies, this 135 cm piece combines functionality with cultural significance. The paddle is adorned with traditional Marquesan symbols on both sides, symbolizing the preservation and protection of the community.
