Hoe Mata Tiki (Paddle)

Marquesan canoe paddle adorned with the eyes of a Tiki (Mata Tiki) - and carved in oceanic rosewood from the island of Nuku Hiva. Tiki represents etua (god) deified ancestors whose supernatural powers sustain and protect the community – and the eyes were the most supernaturally powerful element of the face.
