Term “tiki” is complex and multilayered in Marquesan culture. It generally represents deified ancestors or sometimes gods. Tiki also means virility, fertility, creativity, abundance. There is some uncertainty as to whether Tiki is a god or a human being; he is often regarded as both.

Tiki is central to the legend that describes the origins of Marquesan carving. In the story, Tiki lived in Havai Ki Pe (the land of the ancestors). He was very powerful because he possessed a body, as well as the ability to create other bodies. From sand, he created a wife and together they produced a daughter and a son. The children, in turn, through the incestuous relationship had a daughter and a son. At this time, the world consisted only of water, so Tiki created an island for his children and grandchildren and named it Nuku Hiva.

Tiki is always present at the important ceremonies. Marquesans keep tiki inside and outside of their houses, wear it as tattoos and pendants.

Every Tiki is hand-carved and no two Tikis are exactly alike. They often serve to mark the boundaries of sacred or significant sites. Whether you're enhancing your home, your business or event with a unique piece of art or hoping to bring good fortune and blessings to your settings, we can offer you the authentic quality and variety of Tiki that you're looking for.

Tiki PaePae was hand-carved in oceania rosewood and it displays traditional Marquesan symbols for protection. Mata Tiki (the eyes of Tiki) were carved on the back of the body to strengthen the protection.
