After some trials and tribulations with shipping (thanks to the hard work of Ana & T, I received my piece. It is beautiful and feel so fortunate to have it. Exceeded my expectations on all fronts. Thank you!!
I and a friend of mine collect postcards from all over the world and I found that Cannibal Art had postcards on their website store. Unfortunately, the items were out of stock, so I wrote to ask if there was any chance they still have the possibility of shipping two postcards.
I got Ana's reply within hours, and she told me she would be super happy to send me and my friend two postcards written, stamped and mailed by her directly from Nuku Hiva. I made the payment on the Cannibal Art website and after about a month (the standard travel time for snail mail from the Marquesas to reach us in Italy) we found two beautiful postcards with wonderful stamps and a kind message in our mailbox.

After a deep dive into the Marquesan culture, travellers who make their way to the remote Marquesan Islands typically love to either take a locally made tattoo or carved artefacts back home. Crafted artefacts can be found at various local artisan markets and the bone carvers of Tahuata and their traditional art form are famous and highly regarded as being among the finest in Polynesia.
What interests me in particular are beautifully carved war clubs / status symbols of the Marquesas Islands ('uu / u'u) that had intrigued explorers, traders, whalers and the like ever since the end of the 18th century. Many people say it would be best to directly establish contacts with local carvers for an exquisite souvenir and this is exactly why I contacted Tangy Taupotini and Ana from Cannibal Art and asked whether Tangy would be happy working on a commissioned u'u carving for me.
I seriously believe Tangy - who comes from a well-known Marquesan family of woodcarvers, who is widely regarded as a master carver (tuhuna) and who contributed with his authority on Marquesan culture in a June 2025 ARTE TV documentation on Marquesan tattoos - is the artist you want to rely upon. Any customer must certainly be overwhelmed by Tangy’s and Ana’s focus on customer care, dedication, warmth in communication, artistry / craftsmanship, attention to detail and last but not least on very professional packaging for a safe transport / shipping of Tangy’s artwork. For each of the categories mentioned Cannibal Art truly deserves a five star rating.

We visited Ana and Tangy for a hiking excursion in Nuku Hiva. After the hike they invited us to their home and gallery for a fabulous lunch before leaving. The hike was a 10/10 with Ana giving such wonderful commentary on the area and history of their village. The gallery has amazing hand carved at that was just stunning. We didn't buy anything while there due to no luggage space but after getting home i wanted to purchase Anas book about her travels. Ana let me know when it was mailed and it arrived today! I'm excited to read about her travel journeys that lead here to her home in French Polynesian. We can't wait to go back for another visit!
