Popoi Pounder (Keà Tuki Popoi)
A Popoi Pounder is a traditional tool used by the Native Marquesans to pound breadfruit into a smooth, sticky paste known as "popoi." Popoi is a staple food in the Marquesan culture, and its preparation is labor-intensive. The act of pounding popoi in the traditional manner is still practiced and is highly valued for its cultural and ceremonial significance.
This Popoi Pounder was crafted from basalt rock on Ua Pou Island in the Marquesas Archipelago.
