Hoe (Canoe Paddle)
Marquesan canoe paddle adorned with the eyes of a tiki and the traditional symbols for protection. Carved in oceanic rosewood from the island of Nuku Hiva. Tiki represents etua (god) deified ancestors whose supernatural powers sustain and protect the community – and the eyes were the most supernaturally powerful element of the face. The grip of the canoe paddle is designed in the form of a manta ray.
