QUICK ANSWERS
All guests should be in good health and physically fit for the hike. The recommended age is under 70 years. Our beautiful valley doesn’t have a port for boats. You’ll be dropped off in knee-deep water and assisted when entering and exiting the boat.
The boat taxi is located in Taiohae Bay - the same bay where your cruise ship anchors. The same port serves as the departure point for the boat taxi to Hakaui Valley. The boat taxi typically departs Taiohae at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m., though alternative schedules can be arranged if needed.
The boat Captain is flexible when it comes to the guests from the cruise ships because he understands that sometimes there are delays during the anchoring and transporting of many people - so he will wait for you if you are delayed. Also, we will share the Captain's direct telephone number with you before your arrival so you can reach him in case of an emergency.
The boat taxis are extremely reliable. They understand the importance of getting you back to your ship safely and on time. With years of experience running tours, we’ve never had any incidents. Skilled captains and well-maintained boats ensure a smooth, dependable journey every time. Relax and enjoy the adventure knowing you're in safe hands.
The transfer is provided by separate companies and must be paid for directly to them. We arrange this service for our guests without taking any commission. The cost for a boat taxi accommodating 1 to 4 people is 16,000 xpf for a round trip, shared among the passengers. For groups larger than 4 people, the cost is 4,000 xpf per person for the round trip. Boat taxi companies only accept local currency in cash.
Hiking shoes and/or water sandals (suitable for river crossings)
1.5 liters of water per person
Insect repellent
Sunscreen
Towel
Rain jacket or poncho
Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing suitable for both hiking and swimming. During the wet season, a raincoat is recommended, as brief but intense showers can soak you in minutes. Light, long-sleeved shirts and pants are also helpful for extra protection against insects.
A pair of hiking (or running) shoes that are water-friendly, as we'll be crossing the river multiple times. Keep in mind that Hakaui lacks a port or dock, so you will be dropped off in shallow knee-deep water.
In case of unforeseen circumstances, we will accept cancellations and issue a full refund.
The hike can be challenging for guests over 65 or those without hiking experience. The trail is rocky, requires a few river crossings, and is best suited for those in good physical condition. However, everyone is welcome to visit Hakaui! If you prefer not to join the hike, you can relax in our village, enjoy a refreshing swim in the river or ocean, or check out Tanguy’s artwork. While the group hikes, you'll have time to relax, and everyone will reunite for a home-cooked lunch upon their return.
Vaipo waterfall is surrounded by cliffs, which increases the chance of falling rocks. This risk is even greater during rainy weather. We guide our guests through the entire journey, including inside the waterfall, provided they complete and sign our liability release form.
There is no road leading to Hakaui. Your best option is to either rent a boat independently or let us assist you in arranging one.
