Mata Pupua (Mask)
Mata Pupua was carved in oceanic rosewood (mio) which is the local wood from the island of Nuku Hiva. It is adorned with the Marquesan ancestral motifs for protection. Tiki in the Marquesan culture represents “etua” (god) deified ancestors whose supernatural powers sustain and protect the community. Mata Pupua translates into "Shiny eyes" in the Marquesan language.
