Tiki Canoe Paddle
Marquesan canoe paddle adorned with the eyes of a tiki; a mother tiki holding a baby, and the traditional symbols for protection. Carved in oceanic rosewood from the island of Nuku Hiva. Tiki represents etua (god) deified ancestors whose supernatural powers sustain and protect the community – and the eyes were the most supernaturally powerful element of the face.
